The Poetical Works of Wordsworth, ed. Thomas Hutchinson, rev. Ernest de Selincourt (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1950), p. 199. 2 Formal Pleasure in the Sonnets Helen Vendler The Art of the Sonnets, and the Speaker They Create With respect to the Sonnets – a text now almost four hundred years old – what can a commentary offer that is new? It can, I think, approach the sonnets, as I have chosen to do, from the vantage point of the poet who wrote them, asking the questions that a poet would ask about any poem.

S. Mill and T. S. Eliot); this would make the reader an eavesdropping voyeur of the writer’s sensations. Nor is the poet “speaking to himself” without reference to a reader (if so, there would be no need to write the poem down, and all communicative action would be absent). While the social genres “build in” the reader either as listener (to a narrator of a novel) or as audience (to a play), the private literary genres – such as the Psalms, or prayers printed in prayer books, or secular lyrics – are scripted for repeated personal recitation.

In the limited terms of my thesis that multiplicity of structures is an essence of verse, the sonnet is an especially poetic form. The first line of an English sonnet participates in a metrical pattern (fourteen iambic pentameter lines), a rhyme pattern (abab), a trio of quatrains (alike in being quatrains, different in using different rhymes), and an overall pattern contrasting two different kinds of rhyme scheme (three quatrains set against one couplet). I suggest that the concentration of different organizing systems active in the form before any particulars of substance or syntax are added is such as to attract the kind of mind that is particularly happy in the multiple organizations of verse: witness Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth.
